Google Docs add-on: approved documents in Google Docs

Draft in Google Docs, keep approvals in VersoDocs. The add-on opens the Current version of a document in a Google Doc, keeps the Doc linked to it, tells you when a newer version is approved, and sends your edits back as a proposal that goes through normal review. All plans · proposing: Pro

Every plan can search, open the Current version, link a file and see the newer-version notice. Proposing changes from the add-ins needs Pro: on other plans Propose changes is shown locked with an upgrade link, and after a downgrade the add-in keeps reading but can no longer propose.

Install

  • From Google Workspace Marketplace: search VersoDocs and click Install, or in a Doc open Extensions → Add-ons → Get add-ons.
  • For your whole domain: a Google Workspace admin installs it for everyone from the Marketplace listing (Admin install).

Open a Doc and click the VersoDocs icon in the right side panel. The first time, Google asks you to allow the add-on, then Authorize signs you in to VersoDocs in a new tab. Close the tab when it says connected. Finally allow access to the open document (the add-on only touches Docs you open it in).

Use it

  • Open here: search approved documents and pick one. After you confirm, the Doc is replaced with the Current version (headings, lists, tables, links, bold, italic and code) and linked to it. Google Docs version history keeps the previous content.
  • Link only: keep the Doc as it is and link it to a VersoDocs document at its Current version.
  • Newer version notice: when a newer version is approved after the one you opened, the panel says so. Load latest replaces the content with it.
  • Propose changes (Pro): give the proposal a title (and optionally what changed and why). The whole Doc becomes the proposed content; reviewers see the diff against Current and approve it in VersoDocs.
  • Unlink removes the link from the Doc; the VersoDocs document is not affected.

Images go with the proposal: up to 20 inline PNG, JPEG, GIF or WebP images of up to 5.0 MB each are uploaded to VersoDocs, and the panel says which were left out. Drawings and Google Docs comments and suggestions stay in Google Docs. Google permissions asked: the current document only, files the add-on is used with, and connecting to versodocs.com.

Sign-in, permissions and data

  • Sign in with VersoDocs (OAuth with PKCE). You pick the organization and approve docs:read and docs:propose: read approved documents and open proposals (proposing works on Pro). The add-in acts as you: it sees the workspaces you can open, and its proposals are authored by you.
  • The connection is listed in Settings → Developer → Connected AI apps with your other connections. It does not count toward the plan's API key limit, so even a Free organization can connect it. Revoke it there at any time.
  • Nothing is published from Google Docs: every change is a proposal that reviewers approve in VersoDocs.
  • The link to a VersoDocs document (organization, document id, title, version) is stored inside the file, so it travels with it. Whoever opens the file still needs their own access.

Under the hood: GET /api/v1/token (who am I: organization, plan, scopes), GET docs and GET search to find documents, GET docs/{id} to open one, GET docs/{id}/current for the newer-version notice and POST docs/{id}/proposals with content_markdown. Same endpoints and rules as the REST API.
