How AI credits work
AI credits pay for the AI that VersoDocs runs for you: AI change summaries and VersoDocs AI reviews. Each organization gets a monthly allowance, and admins can buy extra credits when they need more.
Monthly allowance
| Plan | AI credits a month |
|---|---|
| Free | 0 (VersoDocs AI is on Team and Pro) |
| Team | 100 |
| Pro | 500 |
| Pro trial (14 days) | 500 |
Credits are shared by the whole organization and reset on the 1st of each month (UTC). Unused monthly credits do not roll over.
What uses credits
- Uses credits: AI change summaries (in Compare, on proposals and in publish notifications) and reviews by the VersoDocs AI reviewer.
- Free: AI reviewers on your own API key (your provider bills you), reviewer bots you run yourself, and any AI call that fails.
How much one action costs
Cost follows the size of the text the AI reads and writes: 1 credit per 4,000 tokens (about 16,000 characters), counting what is sent and what comes back. A summary costs at least 1 credit, a review at least 3, and no single action costs more than 20. Very long documents are shortened before they are sent, so the cap is rarely reached.
| Example | About | Credits |
|---|---|---|
| Summary of a typical change | 3,000 tokens | 1 |
| Summary of a long document | 9,000 tokens | 3 |
| VersoDocs AI review of a typical proposal | 8,000 to 20,000 tokens | 3 to 5 |
| Review of a very large document | 40,000 tokens or more | 10 or more, never above 20 |
Credits cost the same whichever AI provider processes the request.
Which credits are used first
- This month's allowance.
- Then extra credit packs, oldest first.
Extra credits
Owners and admins of a Team or Pro organization can buy packs on the Billing page: 500 credits for $5 or 2,500 credits for $20. A pack lasts 12 months from purchase and is only used after the monthly allowance. If an organization moves to Free, its packs are kept but cannot be spent until it is back on Team or Pro.
When credits run out
- An action only starts when the organization has at least its minimum available (1 for a summary, 3 for a review).
- Out of credits: Summarize changes says so, publish notifications use the proposal title instead of an AI summary, and VersoDocs AI reviews pause with a note on the reviewer.
- Everything resumes on the 1st of next month, or right away when an admin buys a pack. Reviewers on your own key keep running.
- An action that already started finishes and is charged in full, even if it uses a little more than what was left.
See current usage on the Billing page and in Settings → AI reviewers.
