AI reviewers: your LLM, your checklist, advisory verdicts

An AI reviewer reads a proposal and posts a summary, inline comments and, if you want, an advisory verdict, like a reviewer who never gets tired of the checklist. Two flavors: a hosted reviewer that VersoDocs runs, either on VersoDocs AI (uses your plan's monthly AI credits) or with your own LLM API key (BYOK, unmetered), or a reviewer bot you run yourself, called by webhook and answering over the REST API. People still decide: an AI approval never counts.

Plans

FreeTeamPro
Hosted AI reviewers per workspace—1Unlimited
Hosted AI credits / month (3 to 5 per typical VersoDocs AI review)—100500
Runs automatically or on request—✓✓
Scope—Whole workspaceWorkspace or selected folders
“AI request-changes blocks publish” (opt-in)——✓
Reviewer bots (API key + webhook) per workspace—320

With your own key, LLM usage is billed by your provider. VersoDocs AI reviews use AI credits (shared with AI change summaries, reset on the 1st of each month UTC). Credits scale with size: 1 credit per 4,000 tokens processed, at least 3 per review and 1 per summary, so about 1 credit per typical summary, 3 to 5 per review, more for very large documents (how AI credits work); when they run out, VersoDocs AI reviews use any extra AI credits an org owner or admin bought on the Billing page (from $5, valid 12 months, oldest first), then pause until the reset; your own-key reviewers keep running. After a downgrade, reviewers stay configured but a folder-scoped one stops running and blocking turns off.

Set up a hosted reviewer

Workspace admins, in Workspace settings → AI reviewers → Add AI reviewer:

  1. Name it, e.g. Security checklist. That is how it appears on proposals.
  2. Provider and model. VersoDocs AI (uses credits), OpenAI, Anthropic (Claude), Google Gemini, OpenAI-compatible (custom base URL). The model is free text (any id your provider accepts). A custom base URL must be https://. VersoDocs AI (uses credits) needs no model, key or base URL.
  3. API key (your own provider only). Encrypted at rest (AES-256-GCM) and write-only: never shown again, only its last 4 characters. Replace it any time.
  4. Review instructions. Markdown: your checklist, style guide or standard. Sent as the reviewer's instructions on every run.
  5. Trigger. Automatic: when a proposal is sent for review, re-sent, or revised through the API; the same text is never reviewed twice. On request: only when someone clicks Request review in the proposal's reviewers panel. The author, the requested reviewers and workspace editors / admins can request (or retry) a review; viewers cannot.
  6. Scope. The whole workspace, or selected folders and their subfolders (Pro).
  7. Verdict. Comments only, or comments + advisory verdict. On Pro, optionally AI request-changes blocks publish (see below).
  8. Test connection sends a one-line prompt to check the key and model before you save.

Each review posts one summary comment plus up to 20 inline comments anchored on the text they quote, each tagged info / minor / major / critical. A comment whose quote isn't found in the text is folded into the summary rather than dropped.

What the model sees

  • Only the proposal under review: document title, proposal title and description, the diff against the published version and the full new text. Never other documents, comments or member data.
  • Your provider, your key, their terms. Requests go straight from VersoDocs to the provider you chose; VersoDocs does not use the content for training. Nothing is sent until an admin configures a reviewer.
  • VersoDocs AI sends the same content to our hosted AI with our key, only to produce the review. It is processed by Cloudflare Workers AI (no retention); if that is unavailable it falls back to Groq (United States, no retention by default), and only if both are unavailable to DeepSeek (China). An organization admin can turn off the DeepSeek fallback in Organization settings → VersoDocs AI processing; reviews then wait and retry instead. Credits cost the same on every provider.
  • Document text is untrusted. It is delimited as data and the model is told to ignore instructions inside it; an attempt to steer the reviewer is reported as a finding. Your review instructions are the only trusted input.
  • Very long documents are cut and the summary says so.

Advisory verdicts and blocking

  • An AI approval never counts toward required approvals, never marks a proposal approved, never triggers auto-publish and never replaces an e-signature. Same rule for hosted reviewers and bots.
  • Blocking only adds a gate (Pro, hosted reviewers, opt-in). While the reviewer's latest verdict is request changes, the proposal can't be published, until it re-reviews a revision and approves or comments, or an admin turns blocking off.
  • AI verdicts appear apart from human reviews, labeled with the reviewer's name, and notify the author.
  • Re-reviews supersede earlier comments. When the proposal is updated and a hosted reviewer runs again, its comments from the earlier run are collapsed and labeled Outdated: from an earlier revision (still one click away). Human inline comments whose quoted text is gone after a new revision get the same label.

Status, retries and usage

Reviews run in the background, usually within a minute: queued → running → done or failed. A transient failure (rate limit, timeout, provider error) is retried, up to 3 attempts (waits of 1 min, then 5 min); a bad key or unknown model fails at once. The proposal's reviewers panel shows each reviewer's status, error and token usage, with Retry; workspace settings show 30-day usage per reviewer. Small proposals start right away; large ones (prompt over 20,000 characters) go to the background runner so a long provider call is never cut off mid-way.

Webhook events

Subscribe a workspace webhook (workspace Developer settings → Webhooks) to react to AI reviews. All events and the signature scheme are listed under Agent workflows → Webhooks.

EventWhen
ai_review.completedA hosted reviewer posted its review. Carries verdict (null in comments-only mode), advisory: true, comments_posted, provider, model, input_tokens, output_tokens.
ai_review.failedA hosted reviewer gave up after 3 attempts or a permanent error. Carries attempts and a redacted error.
review.requestedSomeone asked a reviewer bot to review. Your bot's trigger (below).

Build your own reviewer (Team+)

Run any model, tools or retrieval you like, on your infrastructure. VersoDocs only sees the comments and verdict your bot posts.

  1. Create an org API key with the proposals:review scope (Organization settings → Developer → API access).
  2. Workspace settings → AI reviewers → Register your own bot: name it and pick that key.
  3. Add a workspace webhook (workspace Developer settings → Webhooks) to your bot's URL, format JSON, subscribed to review.requested. Keep its signing secret.
  4. On a proposal, Request review from the bot in the reviewers panel. Your bot gets the webhook, reads the proposal and answers with comments and a verdict through the API, as that key. Its comments and verdicts show the bot’s name with a Bot badge; after rotating the key, edit the bot and pick the new one.

api paths are relative to https://versodocs.com: GET the proposal (content_markdown, diff.unified, …), POST comments { body, quote? | parent_id? } and POST a review { verdict: "approve" | "request_changes" | "comment", body? }. If several bots share one webhook, filter on reviewer_name or api_key_id.

Verify every delivery. x-versodocs-signature-v2 is v2= + hex HMAC-SHA256 of <x-versodocs-timestamp>.<raw body> with the webhook's secret (the whole whsec_… string). Compare against the raw body, in constant time, and reject old timestamps.

Swap the LLM call for any provider. waitUntil keeps a Worker alive about 30 s after the response; for long reviews, hand the job to a Queue.

Node: verify the signature

js
import { createHmac, timingSafeEqual } from 'node:crypto'

// rawBody: the exact request body string (not re-serialized JSON).
export function verifyVersoDocs(secret, rawBody, headers) {
  const ts = headers['x-versodocs-timestamp'] ?? ''
  const sig = headers['x-versodocs-signature-v2'] ?? ''
  if (Math.abs(Date.now() / 1000 - Number(ts)) > 300) return false // replay window
  const expected = `v2=${createHmac('sha256', secret).update(`${ts}.${rawBody}`).digest('hex')}`
  return sig.length === expected.length && timingSafeEqual(Buffer.from(sig), Buffer.from(expected))
}

A GitHub Action can't receive the webhook directly: relay it to repository_dispatch (e.g. from a small Worker) and do the review in the workflow.
